Wayward dog

Chica once again demonstrated her Shepherd stubbornness. Steve and I took her down along the Ottawa River near Champlain in Orleans to give her a walk before my bookclub. On the way back along the path, she went off toward the water and would not come back. We couldn't even hear her jingling anymore. It was worrisome, especially since the last time she did that, she brought back a dead muskrat and a $700 injury (that could have ended a lot worse). We called and commanded to no avail. I walked up onto the berm beside the path and saw a flash of her. Then, we started hearing the jingle. Walking back down to the path, I forgot about the dip covered by grass in my excitement. Of course, the foot went in, I stumbled and tumbled and landed right in the mud. I got a very unattractive scrape on my elbow, a couple of bruises and a thick layer of stinky mud on my trousers. I called and left a message for my book club, "I'm full of mud." Debbie called just as we were pulling away in the car - very grumpy me sitting on the dog blanket in the back seat with the very very happy Chica. I made the offer of one dog for 25 cents.

Chica celebrates summer

Chica has had a lovely couple of holiday weekends. On June 22nd, Steve, Chica and I drove out to the country with Rachel, a friend, for brunch, where we met up with George, Jo-Anne, Brandy and Martha. From there, we all went to G. & J's where we walked around their acreage. Chica had a great! time mucking about in the river and through the bush. She ran all over with Tank and Lulu, her dog friends.

After that visit, Steve, Chica and I went to Martha's, where after a run around the lawn, Chica made straight for the swimming pond and had more fun in the water. We played ball and visited. Chica discovered the groundhog haunts and kept careful watch.

That night, she slept in a motel on the way home and slept well!

This past weekend, we drove out to Elgin where we met up with Martha, Matthew and Justine and their children. We all then went over to the strawberry social at Rockburn. There, we met up with George, Jo-Anne, and Brandy. We all took our strawberries outside to a picnic bench. Steve went and got Chica from the car, where he had parked carefully in the shade. She was so happy to come to see everyone! She was good with the kids and even got down on her stomach in front of Adeline (my young niece) and crawled forward to get closer to her. A young boy from next door came over and was showing Watson and Adeline how to swing on a vine attached to one of the trees and how to roll down the hill. It was fun.

We went back to Martha's and visited. Chica stayed there while Steve and I drove to Malone and then to Jon's place on Mount Titus (10 miles outside Malone). We visited with Katie's cat and three dogs. Martha took Chica out with her on her errands and enjoyed having a little companion. Steve and I visited at George and Jo-Anne's where we saw Warren and Leslie-Ann. Jo came with us to get a late lunch at Pivin's (Leblanc Patate) in H'don. Had to have a soft ice cream at the custard stand, also. After another little while at G and J's, we went back to Martha's where Chica came barrelling out of the house, but not to us - priorities! - she went first to the groundhog hole and then came to greet us.

We all sat in Martha's bug tent. Chica came in and out.

Steve and I stayed a second night at Jon's with the dogs and cat and then met up with Martha to go to another strawberry social - this one in H'don. It was very yummy.

Veys and Tom came to visit on Monday and we walked Chica at Bruce Pit.

On Tuesday, Steve and I walked Chica at Bruce Pit, then took her along for a drive around some small towns along the Ottawa River. Chica got in a few swims and had a super time. I threw water up in the air for her as if it were snowballs and she got just as excited as she gets with the snow.

One thing she didn't enjoy was the fireworks and firecrackers that people kept setting off all day and into the evening. There were even some this morning at 6 am! She got into bed with me last night and I tried to make her feel safe without giving her any indication that there was anything at all to be scared of.
